As a publisher, I enjoy nothing better than hearing the sound of the printing presses. So this shop is always a joyful experience for me. As well as the exclusivity of the stationary, beautiful old maps and prints of Milan and Italy are its specialty. The atmosphere is solidly antique. The service is genteel whether you are buying one card or ordering your stationary for the entire year. It’s an unrushed oasis in the middle of the bustle of the city of Milan. Family-owned, the emphasis is on quality, and that kind of service is increasingly hard to find. You pay your cash to the Señora behind an antique desk, and then collect your purchase. Adorable.

Part of Italian history Fabriano, has been producing quality paper in Italy since the 1200’s. With the help of Giancarlo NajOleari, the mill has transformed itself into a modern, paper boutique offering a range of new and innovative products through the use of quality paper. From Mont Blanc’s, the collection of writing equipment covers every price range, and makes of pen. Family owned, the entire family can often be found at the weekends manning the shop. Any available pen on the market can be found at La Stilografica. I recently purchased a gift for a medical student that just passed the first of an important set of exams, the combination of roller ball, pencil eraser, and fountain pen, came in a hard wearing case, suitable for a student to throw into his duffel, at a very reasonable price. The choice is vast, the service helpful and cheerful.
